Oh, good idea Joanna! Maybe we can combined efforts on that?
I’m sure we both can come up with a big list of “apps we need”.
Keep me posted on your friend too! I was going to start looking into what it takes to develop an app.
Thanks Joanna!

I stumbled upon this post , from a “Google Alert”. I am the developer of “Droid Of The Day”. It is something I do for fun, in my spare time.
It is super cool that you included it in this list, and I really appreciate you mentioning my app.
I am adding this blog to my regular reading rotation, as you have some great articles. Keep up the great work, and thanks again for the recommendation.
Hey Mike! Thanks for stopping by!
I love your app! Thanks for doing it!
So I have to ask… How hard is it to develop an app and submit it?

I wouldn’t say it is easy to write apps for Android. Even for my app, which has a very limited functionality, it was a bit of work to get completely right. I am a software engineer by profession, which I suppose makes it more natural for me.
Google has announced an initiative named “Android App Inventor”, which is a toolkit specifically designed to allow non-developers to create their own apps. It isn’t available to the public yet, but might make it easy for people to create apps. Basically, it allows you to drag and drop functionality, to create whatever you want. I have played with an early release, and I didn’t find it that easy, but I think in time it will get better.
As far as distributing the app, it couldn’t be easier. Basically anyone just has to pay a fee (one time – $25) to create a Android Market account. Then you just upload your app (they provide a nice website), and it appears in the market. This is quite different than iPhone, where you pay a fee ($100/year), upload your app, and hope it gets approved to get listed (Apple is notorious for not allowing apps, and not providing any reasoning why it was not allowed.
Getting noticed, once you are listed in the Android Market is the hard part (estimates are there are 70,000 apps now – and that is constantly growing). So, thanks again for bringing attention to my app – it really helps.
My favorite App is Hoccer. It allows you to share files, audio, photos, etc. with someone nearby. You can throw the files like a baseball or frisbee or line your phones up side by side and slide them over. Definitely a cool App.

I have been using Android for a while now. I already have some of these apps but not all of them. Off to Marketplace to look at the one’s I don’t have.
Thanks for this list.
